This museum, which is one of the best museums of American combat aircraft in the world (apparently), is located maybe fifteen minutes away from my house. Weird, then, that I haven't been there since I was nine years old. I went back over the weekend, and took some pictures while I was there.
Car because Oppo.
If you have a question I will answer it to the best of my ability, but I am not a plane expert. I was just there for the green Chevy.

Ahhhh planes that are also boats are my FAV!!

This is in Nevada or something right? I went there with my dad when we drove across the US in his Volvo wagon, back in 2002.

Omaha. I'm a bit bummed I didn't go when I was there a few weeks back.

Right, right. It was high on 12 year old JBH's list of sights to see. Along with every single fireworks depot between Ohio and California.

For some reason I never realized how big the Vulcan is. Beautiful bird.

It's huge. I actually drove underneath it.

holy cow! there are a LOT of big planes jammed into that space!
![]() 02/24/2015 at 10:38 |
|
Yup. Unfortunately with planes like the B-52, it takes up so much hanger that it has to be surrounded by other planes, which makes getting a good picture nearly impossible.

Such planelopnik. Many technology. So aerospace. Wow. It seems to be turning into a banner day for planelopnik - I just put up a post, Kat Callahan put up a post, and I don't think we've even had the usual from ttyymmnn yet.

Wait there is a B-1, SR-71, F-111 Vulcan, B-36 and B-58 all in one place! My god I need to go there and check this out. Its a 13 hour drive but worth it!

Also, I love the Hustler, and the Stratojet, and the Mitchell H, and... basically everything here. The -36 and parasite fighter are particularly impressive.

The B-1 is currently undergoing restoration. Again. Not sure why the Vulcan is outside.

One of two, if I'm not mistaken.
![]() 02/24/2015 at 10:59 |

Correct, I think only 2 were made.

I used to go there all the time. Were they restoring anything in the hanger by the food court?

This T-29 and a C-54 Skymaster with the wing visible on the left.

Wow, the last time I saw her, she had just arrived and was still on the other side of the fence on the Offut tarmac. They really set up a place of honor.

That's a remarkable collection. *added to list of places to go*

I'll need to add this to my list of places I need to visit. I'm lucky enough to live within an hours drive of the airforce museum in Dayton, Ohio which I have lived that far from it for the last ten years but have still yet to go there. On the other hand my dad lives near the naval aviation museum in Pensacola, FL and I've been there several times.

Glad to see they have made the SAC museum fantastic. These are from when I was a kid back in the mid 80's. My Father was an air traffic controller stationed at Offutt AFB and I went to that museum when it was on the base all the time. I crawled up into the B52 all the way back to the tail gunners spot.
I remember when the RAF returned to England and they left the Vulcan. And the U2 was donated after a mishap after an airshow, if I remember correctly.
I like the old B29 name better though.

Neat pictures! The museum has since moved to Ashland.

That is a very odd color scheme.

Did they finish restoring the B-29? The last time I was there, it was under restoration. I also got sick after riding the simulator a few times.

A quick Googling says yes, about two years ago.

Restoration or something. Not actual paint color.
02/24/2015 at 22:31 |

Ah, that makes sense. B-1s now are in all over Gunship Gray (booooooring!), though at least the old Strategic scheme mixed it up with Euro 1 and olive drab.

Okay, then I need to go back soon.

I lost my shit when I saw that B-45

Do you have any pictures of the tail flash or tail number? My dad flew these during the late 70's and early 80's. And I've seen several planes that he actually flew, was wondering if this might be another one.
![]() 04/03/2015 at 06:13 |

Nevermind, I went to the museum website and they gave the history of the airframe and it was retired in 1970, 3 years before my dad began UPT.

The Goblin? Insane “Parasite Fighter”. Rumor has it the men who flew this airplane required wheel-barrows to carry their huge balls around.
